I RGRET MY OPPOSITION TO AKIN JOHNSON'S CHAIRMANSHIP AMBITION, REV ASIWAJU CONFESSES FROM THE ALTER OF GOSPEL
CULLED from The County,
REV Dickson Asiwaju has confessed to regretting his opposition voice to the bidding of Hon Ibrahim Akinpelu Johnson for his current office of Executive Chairman of Alimosho LGA last year. He noted that Johnson's victory was divined and it had shown to be for a purpose. “We have been seen that in just a short time of his tenure”, he said. He also praised the Vice Chairman, Hon Francis for his humility to accept working with his boss and doing so with a down to heart loyalty and cooperation that has ensured the progress Alimosho LG has witnessed in the short while.
In context of his lecture informing the gathering, he said the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had been divided by doctrinal belief, thus urging true believers to note the words of Bible as the central theme of their relationship with God.
These were the notable political and spiritual take home from the event of “Lenten talk” programme organised by the Christian Chapel of Alimosho LG held in the period of 2026 Lent. Rev Asiwaju was the Guest Speaker on the topic: “The Importance of Fasting” in which he observed that any fasting devoid of humility, prayer and humbleness could not be a rewardable fasting.
The Council Chairman, Akin Johnson, and his Vice Chairman, Hon Adebisi Frances were unavoidably absent. The Chairman was represented by Hon Mojisola Niyi who delivered the chairman's key note Address. Just a few minutes into his lecture and just after the protocol observation, Rev Asiwaju said he wished the Council Chairman were on seat at the event because he wished to tell him something.

“Where is the Council Chairman?” he queried for the start. “I know he is not here but I wish he is on seat so that I can tell him this. His Chairmanship is divined and I must tell the truth as a Christian leader. From the little works he has done so far, he has performed excellently. I was one of the people that opposed him last year. He must have read the newspaper where I said he was not fit for the office.
“I do not think we have ever organized a programme like this (Lenten Talk) in the Council. If we had prepared to do it or plan to do it, somehow, it would be botched. But here we are and we have the Council Chairman, Hon Johnson to thank for the success. I know when the organizers told him I would be the Guest Speaker, he would have told them: ‘so, you are bringing that trouble man’.
“I also want to acknowledge the humility of the Vice Chairman, Hon Francis, who I could see as working hand in hand with his chairman. He had once been a Vice Chairman of this Council and yet he came back to accept to serve as Vice under his current boss and he's doing so with the highest degree of humbleness. God will continue to bless the two of them”.
Speaking on the subject of the programme, he thanked the Christian Chapel of the Council for organizing the programme because, in his words, it was good as a “unifying block for the five divisions of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)”.
He said the CAN had been separated by doctrinal beliefs, which according to him, could “never save anyone”, except the individual's belief in Jesus Christ as the saviour. He added that the differences in these doctrines had affected everything about centrality of the, christendom, which included the fasting.
“Thus, according to him, he had to reframe the topic given to him to a suitable way as “Fasting in the way of the Bible”. He described fasting as spiritual engagement in course to win souls. “It goes beyond abstinence from food”, he said.
Noting the correlation between fasting and hardship situation or personal problem, he said people should know that it is not every bad situation or problem that requires fasting. “what is needed is ceaseless prayer”.
However, He agreed that voluntary abstinence from food could become fasting when it is for the purpose of seeking spiritual growth. He drew example to this by noting Jesus fasted only once in his lifetime and it was for the purpose of his ushering into the higher realm to start his gospel mission.
